Fresh Breath

Posted 08/20/18

This week USA Today quoted a quip survey of 6,000 adults: “50% of Americans have refused a kiss from someone because the person has bad breath.”

It is estimated that there are up to 90 million people who suffer from Chronic Bad Breath. It is an embarrassing problem that can be psychologically damaging, resulting in loss of jobs, and personal relationships. Most people feel self-conscious about bad breath.

At The dental practice of Anna C. Giacalone, DMD we are committed to helping those with breath problems. We instituted A Fresh Breath Center to specifically address this disorder, treating it as a medical Problem.

Halitosis is More Than A Social Problem

While bad breath originates in the mouth 80% of the time, often times it is a symptom of underlying disease which needs the earliest possible treatment.

Diagnosis:

We will analyze the source of your bad breath, measuring the degree, and try to evaluate and solve your problem in a limited number of visits. Using our new diagnostic instrument, we will be able to actually measure the Volatile Sulfur Gases present in your mouth.

From where do these volatile sulfur compounds come, and why are they important? Certain bacteria in the oral cavity break down proteins in saliva producing a foul-smelling sulfur gas. Sulfur gas is what gives rotten egg its characteristic odor.

A personal interview, oral cancer exam, periodontal evaluation and clinical exam are also used to properly diagnose your problems

Treatment:

Once we have determined the degree and cause of the breath problem, the treatment can take many forms. If medical problems are found to be the underlying cause of bad breath, proper referral will be made.

Dental problems account for the majority of breath disorders. These can range from broken, leaking fillings or obvious infection, to loose crowns, and calculus build-up which can harbor odor -causing bacteria. Recommendation will be made to correct and treat any dental disease that is directly related to the breath problem.

Finally, an effective home care program will be designed for the destruction of the volatile sulfur gases. Our goal is a clean, healthy mouth with fresh breath.

Dr. Giacalone is eager to help her patients solve an important social and health problem through her Fresh Breath Center.
